ODE TO SITTING MEDITATION BY ZEN MASTER HAKUIN
Master Hakuin (->Wikipedia) was one of the greatest of all times. He was a true awakened being and a genius whose acutely clear descriptions of the true nature of phenomena has helped countless zen practitioners and other spiritual seekers for centuries. He is called my many titles, including a great sage who comes once in 500 years. As for the commentary, there is a whole book by master (Shibayama Zenkei), which I plan on translating at some point. So, please, bear with me. Meanwhile, lets just meditate on the text itself.

All living [beings are] primordially awaken
[being] like water and ice
without water, [there] is no ice
apart from all living [beings there] is no awaken[ing].
Not knowing [how] close all living [beings] are
[and] searching [for them] far away - how vain [that is]!
For example, being [submerged] in water
and cry of thirst is similar [to that].
Being a child of a noble house[hold]
and wandering in a poor village is not different.
The fate of the cycle of the six levels of existence
Is the ego [wandering on] the darkly paths of complaining
Stepping from one darkly path to another,
Once [one] must abandon birth and death!
[For] that is the dhyāna and samādhi of The Great Vehicle
more than worthy of laudation [and acclaim]
all the perfections of generosity, morality,
aspiring to awakening, confession, practice, etc.
[Through] all good actions abundant with these items
everyone will return this center [root]
[Even for] those who sit [only] once
countless accumulated misdeeds [will] perish
How could there be evil intentions...
The Pure land is indeed not far.
[How] grateful [shall one be] for this Dharma,
when it touches [our] ear [just] once -
who praises [it with] deep gratitude
[meets] no limit in gaining fortune
Not to mention [through] one's self dedicating the merits [to all sentient beings]
if [one] directly realizes [one's] own nature
- own nature being non-nature (empty)
[one will naturally have] already abandoned [are] void discussions.
[They shall] open the door of oneness of cause and effect
setting [on] the way of non-duality and non-triality (of the three jewels)
making the non-likeness of likeness the likeness,
[then] going and returning are no [longer] different.
making the non-thought of thought the thought,
[then] sings and dancing is the voice of Dharma.
Vast[-spreading is the] sky of samādhi without obstacless,
round and bright the moon of the four wisdoms (Noble Truths)
At this time, what [more] shall [one] search for...
For Nirvāna appears before [us]
The place [we] are is the Land of Lotus,
this body is indeed awakened.
